Literacy
Many of us don't have a large collection of books at home, and we often rely on school and public libraries. The following websites offer a variety of options for you to view, read and/or download books for your child or students. There are many options, so make sure to explore the possibilities and find the options that are best for you.
Epic! Books is a fabulous resource that many Alexander Elementary students are already familiar with. There are a variety of books available for every grade and area of interest. Students can select books to read independently or choose to have stories read aloud to them (audiobooks). Teachers are able to provide access codes to students. Epic! Books is always free for classroom teachers, and they have now provided access to all families as long as school buildings are closed.
Novel Effect: This is an amazing app that makes books 'come alive'. Novel Effect listens along while you are a reading a story and adds music and sounds to go along with each page. This is an amazing app and helps stories feel even more magical.
Audible is an online collection of audiobooks that can be streamed through computers, tablets or mobile devices. There are hundreds of excellent stories and books for you and your child to choose from. Children can choose to listen independently, or you can choose a book for the whole family. Audible will remain free to families and teachers throughout school closures.
Learning A-Z This is a literacy program offering a variety of reading passages, books and activities to practice and develop reading skills. The following two programs are free for teachers and families during school closures.
- 1) RAZ Kids offers levelled books with corresponding comprehension quizzes. RAZ kids can now be accessed through a computer or any IOS or android device.
Unite for Literacy: This resource has many books that are available in different languages and celebrates many cultures through these free picture books. "Unite for Literacy, picture(s) a world where all children have access to an abundance of books that celebrate their languages and cultures and cultivate a lifelong love of reading" (Unite for Literacy, 2014). This is a great website for any student, but especially those who are ELL learners.

Public Library (VIRL) The Vancouver Island Public Library offers thousands of reading materials including, online books, audiobooks, and magazines. If you don't yet have a library card, you can sign up and get one online! Click here to sign up for your very own card.
TumbleBooksLibrary With Tumblebooks, you can access a variety of children's picture books and videos. Any web-enabled device can be used!

Overdrive allows you to download library audiobooks to a kindle, or in a web browser. Kindle can be added to an ipad or android device.
